In early 2017, I was blessed to be able to study abroad for a semester in Oxford, England, with a brief trip into Germany. During my time in Europe, I kept a small sketchbook. The goal was to preserve my memories of the trip in a way more meaningful and lasting to me than photography, since taking the time to sketch a thing allowed me to experience it more deeply than a quick snapshot. I don’t usually draw architecture or other subjects with lots of straight lines and right angles, but many of my drawings from this trip ended up featuring Europe’s wonderful old buildings. But I still prefer the fun of drawing more natural and irregular forms, and my sketch of Stonehenge—with all its rough, weathered shapes and dramatic shadows—is my favorite from this collection. I’ve included some more excerpts from the trip’s sketchbook below.
