I’ve always been drawn to images that are mostly characterized by shadow with a small but significant source of light. This kind of night-level lighting is difficult to capture in art, or even to get good photos that can be useful as references. I had to borrow my husband’s phone, which has a more sensitive camera than mine, to take a decent picture of the way our sunrise alarm clock illuminated the vase and a couple of decorative wooden instruments on our bedroom dresser before I could attempt to draw the picture someplace where I had enough light to see what I was doing. The lower image is of me and my husband, using a screenshot taken during a video call.
