Over the past few years, I’ve developed a casual interest in herbalism. So far, it’s only amounted to my making a few teas and salves for my family’s minor ailments, but I also just find it interesting to learn about the natural medicines God built into his creation. It can be difficult to sift through both the folklore and the modern research surrounding such remedies, however, so at one point I had intended to make an herbal notebook compiling information from sources I trusted for my own convenient reference. I even began my own illustrations of different herbs. The project was short-lived; as often happens, I found my ideas were bigger than the time I could put into them. But I enjoyed the chance to study the different plants by drawing them. It was especially fun figuring out how to depict common kitchen spices like connamon and turmeric as part of a larger plant.
